Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

If you have ever wanted to tell off a client, management, or someone you know, first clear all emotions. Exercise helps, especially in the great outdoors. But if you don’t have time to leave the scene, give pause to figure out the next best steps.

My Story About Diplomacy

I will be forever grateful for the Dale Carnegie public speaking program I took at the start of my career. One of my favorite books is his, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” It made a mark on my psyche and influenced how to conduct both personal and business conversations.

The entire sales experience, including horrific stories trying to get me to quit sales jobs, transformed into my own book.  The International Best-Selling book became known as, “Nice Girls DO Get the Sale: Relationship Building That Gets Results.”

Diplomacy, humor, and kindness sell best and deflect nastiness ensuring ‘the win.’

“You Are Never Alone” is a guest story provided by Tim Blaney, CEO SalesMaps.

Interviewing for a Job

Strange questions out of left field are frequently hurled at job seekers. The person applying is already stressed about earning enough to pay bills. Ridiculous questions and requests such as, “Tell me a joke,” will set the anger meter to high.

Two options exist for a reply to annoying job interview questions.

  1. If you aren’t sure you want the job; you can eliminate wasting time by answering, ‘This isn’t for me.
    OR
  2. You can remain calm and ask why the question is being proposed so that you may adequately respond.

In this case, I walked.

Answering Management: Use Questions

There are times when management will harass us or establish a rule that we view as ridiculous. One strategy that works well is to answer difficult questions with a question.

My favorite example is that of a threat from a former sales manager: “If you don’t begin to sell like everyone else, you will be fired.”

With a smile, I calmly asked, ‘If I’m doing everything wrong, can you explain why I’m always at the top of the sales scoreboard?’

I continued working my way!

Maintaining Friendships

Personal situations are always the most difficult. A group of friends play a weekly board game. As of late, Julianne joined in to play. The fear is Julianne may have early signs of dementia. The lack of understanding rules, or even recognizing when it’s her turn to play is turning off the regulars.

Some suggested that an honest conversation take place with Julianne. As we spoke, I recognized how to improve the original idea. An offer was made to teach her the strategies of the game in a private setting.

Your Story About Diplomacy

In the process of maturing, we all get into arguments and leave the scene with a bad taste. Unfortunately, anger leaves little room for coming to terms.

Those wishing to excel in the field of sales will learn much by practicing negotiating improved outcomes with friends.

When projects appear as becoming unhinged, or nasty remarks come your way, the way in which you respond determines the outcome.

Do You:

  • Get everything off your chest to relieve the stress
  • Experience regret after ‘setting the record straight’
  • Step back to examine all the possible reasoning for what transpired
  • Gather ideas before speaking
  • Ask questions with diplomacy to get back on track?

Two threads usually go unnoticed as mishaps occur:

  1. The seemingly unfortunate incident may be a blessing in disguise
  2. Determination plus flexibility help you find the better path

Read, Do You Replay the Pros and Cons?

Your willingness to examine all reasoning for what just happened along with the unlimited possibilities that lie ahead will save you from experiencing a sinkhole. Sometimes, when remarks are unkind, it’s because the people you can leave behind are scared.

Stop, listen and consider the possibilities, and then smile. You may have been given the golden secret to success.
